Everyone needs a compass on the boat

When you are on the water on your boat it is not all that hard to get lost. 8-) I know, each wave looks the same after a while. If the visual landmarks are obscured, a storm, fog, or just boating and not keeping track a compass can give you a general direction to head. If that heading gets you no where, you can get back to where you were and try again. Your compass and a little sea horse sense can get you a long way, and back again.

Today there are digital or electronic compasses and the old stand by magnetic compasses. The advantage to the digital compass is that it can be integrated to other instruments like a GPS and track and chart plotters. The magnetic compasses can not. Both types tell you were North is. My wife likes the old stand by Binnacle Compass she has on her boat. As she says, I sailed around the world with it.
I like the easy to read digital for my boat. The digital compasses are often multifunctional. For example, if you are following a course the compass can let you know you are off course and what way you need to turn to get back on course.

Everyone needs a compass on there boat. A hand held compass will work as well as a installed digital compass or magnetic compass. The compass can be a life saver.

I got this one for our wood schooner that we built. It is for looks, but it works. The one we use when we sail the schooner is a high quality waterproof one. This one neatly sets over the good one.
