I changed the standing rigging on my boat and with the mast
down I thought I should replace my halyard lines also. I when on line to see
what was available and found a nice article on how to pick new lies.
New England Ropes VPC
was listed as a good halyard line. It has Vectran / Polyester blend core which
gives low stretch and it has a nice braided polyester cover and it gives great protection
from sun damage and best of all it is reasonably priced. It is chafe resistant
and gives you a good grip.
For sheet lines and spinnaker lines Sta-set was suggested. It is all polyester core and cover,
has a little more stretch but it is very free running and slick for going through
blocks. For more performance (and more money) Endura or V-100 was suggested.
I was not sure what I would fine when I when to buy the line,
but I had a better idea on what was available. 8-) It was neat to ask for
specific line and see if they had it. 8-) I was able to get the line and at a
good price, but I do have to say that the color of the line was also important.
Different color lines make it a lot easier when to know what line is which.
When I rigged the little schooner I built I rigged it with
all the same color of line (I bought a full reel of line). The line works well
but I have to always put the same line on the same cleat each time to keep them
straight. I learned a lot building that boat. 8-)
