Watersail: What is it?

Watersail defined:

In the blog about ketches and schooners I mentioned that the boats could be fitted with a water sail. That resulted in a question what is a watersail.

A watersail is one of several types of spritsails.  It is a low studding sail or a sail under the bowsprit of a schooner or clipper ship or sailboat that has a long bowsprit. They are called watersails because they are near the water and have a tendency to get wet.
