Boat Battery hook up safety tips.
When you attach things like a trolling motor to your battery,
or any connection to your battery for that matter, always first check to see if
the thing is in the offsetting. Then connect the Positive ( + ) lead first, and
then connect the Negative ( - ) side.
When you un-hook always disconnect the negative side first,
then the positive side. There is less chance of a spark doing it this way.
I also put Red fingernail polish on the positive cable lead
if the lead is not red. It makes it easy to see what lead you are working with.
I also paint the red polish around the PLUS lead on the battery so it is easy
to see it is the positive side of the battery. It makes it easy to get the
right lead on the right terminal.
When I put the red on the + side of the battery I also paint the date when the battery was bought. That helps when the battery starts to not hold a charge and if I will get a rebate on it when I replace it.
The red paint helps make it safe and a no brain-er when hooking things up to it. (Even after a few beers.)
Be sure you ask your wife before you take her red nail polish and tell her what you are using it for. It saves a lot of problems. 8-)
