Using a Bait Caster
When casting with a Bait casting reel you do not whip the
rod. You need to let the rod do the work. Snapping the rod back by flipping
your wrist lets the spring in the rod do the work. A medium to slow action rod
works best.
First adjust the spool tension so the weight of the lure
slowly pulls the line off the spool. This will help to prevent backlash and let
the lure go out smoothly. Let the lure hang 6” to 12” down from the tip of the
rod tip. Thumb the spool to prevent it from turning. Cast with a smooth forward
stroke and let your thumb off the spool when the rod when the rod is at about
the 10:00 o’clock position. Thumb the spool lightly to prevent backlash of the
spool. When the lure gets to the water stop the spool with your thumb.
It takes a bit of practice and if you do not whip the rod
hard you will find it works very well. Start with short casts and get the hang
of it. Go for it and have fun.
